Kennesaw State, UT program to offer research experience to ROTC students

Kennesaw State University and the University of Tennessee (UT), in collaboration with the Office of Naval Research, will launch a unique program training a cohort of Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students at each institution in cybersecurity, data analytics and advance manufacturing.

More than 3,500 spring graduates earn degrees from Kennesaw State

Their official ceremony may be postponed, but more than 3,500 Kennesaw State University students are graduating this week. The May 2020 class of 3,512 graduate candidates – 2,893 undergraduate and 619 graduate students – marks an increase from last spring’s 3,400 graduates. The students are earning their degrees and receiving their diplomas after KSU transitioned to fully remote learning midway through the semester because of the coronavirus outbreak, which also caused the May Commencement ceremonies to be postponed.

Students share research via Virtual Symposium

The 24th annual Symposium of Student Scholars, hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research, was held virtually for the first time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that students would not miss out on valuable experiential learning opportunities. The event is held each year to give undergraduate and graduate researchers from all disciplines at Kennesaw State University the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience.

Renowned cellular biology researcher named dean for College of Science and Mathematics

Kennesaw State University President Pamela Whitten and Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kathy Schwaig have named Kojo Mensa-Wilmot as dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. He will start in his new role on August 1.

Kennesaw State Researcher Wins Petroleum Grant

Altug Poyraz, an assistant professor of inorganic chemistry at Kennesaw State University, has been awarded an American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) grant for research on petroleum coke, a carbon-rich solid fuel produced during the oil refining process.

Salerno Symposium showcases faculty research

Two faculty researchers were recently recognized for their contributions in the fields of chemistry and biology at KSU’s John C. Salerno Memorial Research Symposium, a symposium highlighting a cross-section of faculty research at the University. Altug Poyraz, assistant professor of chemistry, earned the John C. Salerno Prize for Research Achievement, and Martin Hudson, associate professor of biology, received the People’s Choice Award for Best Presentation.

KSU Researcher Receives NSF Grant

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a grant to Kennesaw State University researcher Martina Kaledin to unravel the molecules in hydrogen-bonded systems, using the University’s supercomputer. The aim of the research is to contribute to the development of molecular dynamics computer simulation models, which advance scientists’ understanding of chemical systems, as well as complex biological systems.
